SEB070002 - Tutorial 2

Application Software - A computer program design to carry out a specialized tasks.
Eg. Database management etc.

Communications Device - It refers to a terminal used to send voice, video or text.
Eg. Hand phone, PDA etc.

Computer - A programmable machine that performs high-speed processing of numbers, as well as text, graphic and symbols. It contains a central processing unit (CPU) that interprets and executes instructions.

Desktop Computer
- A personal computer (PC) small enough to fit in an
individual workspace. The term ‘desk’ refers to a stationary position as it resides on a desk.

Embedded Computer - A computer system that is an integral part of a
larger system. It only has a few functions.
Eg. The LED lights in a washing machine etc.

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
- It incorporates movable icons, windows, and mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change the style as well as the size of fonts.

Hardware
- The physical part of a component in a computer. It works in storage and transmission. Eg. Hard disk, floppy disk etc.

Internet - A global network of networks that connect computers via the TCP/IP
(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)

Installing - To connect or set in position and prepared to be used

Network - A collection of computers interconnected. Almost all local area network (LAN) are Ethernet networks. The wireless version of Ethernet is known as Wi-fi.
